"Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle: sing to the Lord, all the earth." - Psalm 96:1
In the classical liberal arts tradition, music is one of the four disciplines in the Quadrivium. Beginning with arithmetic, which is a study of number itself, music is a study of number in time.
Thus, the harmony and beauty our music program seeks to develop and instill in our student's hearts is deeply connected to the rest of our educational foundation.
Mathematics becomes no longer just numbers on a page, but something wonderful that students can experience.
Students from the 4th-8th grade will take a one-day a week enrichment class where music appreciation is taught, rooted in the Catholic tradition, classical music, and our cultural heritage.
Mrs. Vanessa Hurst, who assists the choir of St. Catherine church, also directs a student choir for our school's Mass. Interested students are able to join. Our school masses are open to the public so you can hear them sing (Tuesdays at 8:45 a.m.). Special concerts are also scheduled on occasion.
Piano classes are offered during the school day in collaboration with a local music teacher. These will be included in the weekly routine of students who choose to learn this instrument while at school. The end of year piano recital in the church is always a joyous time for the students to showcase their talents to their families.
Even if a child doesn't choose to partake in these musical opportunities, they will still be able to sing many songs and prayers while at Mass and in the classroom. A favorite piece that students learn is the traditional Latin hymn written by St. Thomas Aquinas, Panis Angelicus—meaning "The Bread of Angels." Indeed, one might mistakenly believe they are hearing angels when the school sings this together.
